Maeve Rourke

My time at UNSW has taught me the value of people-focused design empowered by research, fostering my belief in designing with social and environmental intention. I enjoy a variety of disciplines and skills within the scope of industrial design, but am currently mostly interested in exploring materiality and making. When I’m not in the studio, you’ll find me bouldering or enjoying live music.

SOFIE

Sofie applies friendly iconography in the design of a family of street furniture, promoting safety and more positive attitudes towards the urban environment.

Designed by Maeve Rourke

In urban environments, there is an overwhelming concern for safety in public spaces, particularly at night. This is especially true for women, gender diverse, and young people. These demographics often suffer from ‘behaviour blame’, a lack of inclusivity and feeling pressure to adapt to a space.

CONTEXT

Sofie has been designed as a family of objects dictated by a scattered-style positioning, where the patrons may come and go, using the space as they please. She serves as a facilitator for socialisation and community in line with tactical urbanism philosophy via lighting, materiality, and form.
