SOOZE

Sooze is a modular eye care device designed for Keratoconus patients. Addressing eye discomfort through non-invasive, low level electricity neurostimulation, this device seeks to provide relief when they are awake and asleep. Additionally, a detachable visor module enhances patients’ vision via retinal projection after their removal of contact lenses.

Designed by Maoxin Yuan

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that leads to thinning and protrusion in patients’ cornea. It further results in irregular astigmatism that most patients’ vision can only be improved by customised rigid contact lenses. 1/84 young Australians might be experiencing Keratoconus. Besides, 80% of patients experience issues beyond vision loss such as dry eye, eye pain and foreign body sensation.

Two main challenges for Keratoconus patients are:

One, eye discomfort from Keratoconus and from their whole day use of rigid contact lens, affecting their quality of life and sleep.

Two, limited activity options and impaired mobility after the removal of rigid contact lenses.

CONTEXT

Sooze has a detachable visor module that provides vision support through retinal projection using reflected laser which delivers images directly onto retinal bypassing patients’ cornea. Through connecting a metal weaved head strap to the electrode on the inner side of the headband, low intensity electricity can be delivered to the upper eye area, as directed by the patient's diagnosis and prescription from their doctors and optometrist. This will increase users’ tear production and reduce their pain, It not only helps the patients when they are awake but also prevent potential eye discomfort and disturbances when sleeping. Besides, to further improve patients’ sleep quality, the laser module emits red light, performing a red light therapy at night when the visor is off.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

After the camera and IR sensor capture the view, an ultra-compact optical system projects low-power laser onto user’s retina to form a clear image almost regardless of the condition of the user's cornea.

VIRTUAL RETINAL PROJECTION

The device delivers a current in the nerve branches over the forehead and temple through an electrode and metal-weaved head strap. The amplitude and treatment time is to be determined by professionals.

LOW LEVEL ELECTRICITY NEUROSTIMULATION

The device emits red light, restoring glutathione redox balance upon toxicologic insult and enhancing both cytochrome c oxidase and energy production, all of which may be affected by melatonin. It further regulates sleep and circadian functions.
